The asexual pride flag was created in 2010 through a community vote organized by the Asexual Visibility and Education Network (AVEN). The design was chosen from a pool of submissions by asexual community members.
Black represents asexuality. Grey represents grey-asexuality and demisexuality, the spectrum between asexual and sexual. White represents non-asexual partners and allies. Purple represents community, drawn from AVEN's use of purple in their branding.
AVEN started as an online community in 2001, at a time when asexuality was barely discussed in mainstream LGBTQ+ spaces. The flag gave the community a visual identity that could exist alongside other pride flags at marches and events.
