Kye Rowan designed the nonbinary pride flag in 2014, in response to a call for a flag that represented nonbinary people specifically. The existing genderqueer flag didn't fully represent the breadth of nonbinary identities.
Yellow represents people whose gender exists outside the binary. White represents people with many or all genders. Purple represents people whose gender is a mix of female and male. Black represents people who identify as having no gender.
Rowan was seventeen when they designed it. The flag was adopted quickly and widely, particularly online, where nonbinary communities had been organizing for years without a distinct visual symbol.
