Monica Helms created the transgender pride flag in 1999 and first displayed it at a Pride march in Phoenix, Arizona in 2000. The design is deliberately symmetrical: no matter which way you fly it, it's always correct. Helms described this as representing trans people finding correctness in their own lives.
Light blue and pink are the traditional colors associated with baby boys and girls. The central white stripe represents people who are intersex, transitioning, or identify outside the gender binary.
The original flag was acquired by the Smithsonian Institution in 2014, making it part of the permanent collection of the National Museum of American History.
