Daniel Quasar (who uses they/them pronouns) redesigned the rainbow flag in 2018 to add a chevron pointing rightward. The chevron incorporates the trans flag colors (light blue, pink, and white) alongside brown and black stripes representing BIPOC communities.
The arrow shape is intentional. Quasar described it as pointing forward to represent progress, while the placement along the left edge reminds viewers that progress still needs to be made.
Brown and black stripes had been added to some rainbow flags in Philadelphia in 2017 as horizontal stripes. Quasar's contribution was integrating them with trans colors into a design element that carried its own meaning, rather than simply appending stripes.
The Progress flag was widely adopted by organizations and Pride events starting in 2019. An updated version by Valentino Vecchietti later added an intersex symbol (yellow triangle with a purple circle) within the chevron.
