Gilbert Baker designed the original rainbow flag in San Francisco in 1978, at the request of Harvey Milk. The first version had eight stripes, each with a specific meaning: hot pink for sex, red for life, orange for healing, yellow for sunlight, green for nature, turquoise for magic/art, indigo for serenity, and violet for spirit.
Hot pink was dropped almost immediately because the fabric was hard to source. Turquoise and indigo were later merged into royal blue, leaving the six-stripe version that became the global standard.
Baker hand-dyed the fabric for the first flags. He wanted something that could be claimed by the whole community, not just one organization. A flag felt permanent in a way a slogan couldn't be.
The six-stripe version has been in continuous use since 1979. It flies at Pride events on every continent. It's probably the most reproduced flag design of the last fifty years.
