Michael Page designed the bisexual pride flag in 1998 to give the bisexual community its own distinct symbol. The existing rainbow flag represented the broader LGBTQ+ community, but there was no flag specific to bisexual identity.
The pink stripe represents attraction to the same sex, the blue stripe represents attraction to the opposite sex, and the purple stripe in the middle represents attraction to both. The purple blends naturally from the overlap of pink and blue, which Page described as representing bisexual people blending into both the gay and straight communities, often unnoticed.
The proportions are intentional: the pink and blue stripes are wider, with the purple stripe narrower between them. Page described the narrowness as representing how bisexual people often feel the smaller space between the two larger communities.
