The lesbian community went through several flag designs before settling on this one. An earlier "lipstick lesbian" flag from 2010 drew criticism for excluding butch, nonbinary, and gender nonconforming lesbians.
Emily Gwen's 2018 redesign addressed those concerns directly. The orange shades represent gender nonconformity and independence. The white stripe represents the community's unique relationship to womanhood. The pink shades represent serenity, love, and femininity.
The five-stripe version became the most widely adopted through community consensus, primarily on social media. No formal committee selected it. Lesbian communities voted with visibility, and this design won.
